Sometimes you stumble across a watch brand like EMG watches that has a great reputation for build quality, delivering beautiful timepieces time and time again. I’d spoken to Derek Love and requested a look at a watch I thought I’d be interested in, the beautiful Nemo Diver.
I have to admit I wasn’t expecting what arrived. If the Nautilus is Captin Nemo’s ship then the Nemo Diver would look great next to it under the waves. A truly breathtaking diver has been created here.
EMG’s collaboration with HKED watches has brought one of the best watch cases developed by a microbrand. At 40mm in diameter and a short 47mm in length this case sits beautifully on my 7” wrist, and with a profile of 13.5mm nicely snug as well. A laser-etched screw-down with coin edge grip is easy to use.
Sitting on top of the stainless steel case is a stunning ceramic matt black 120 click bezel with lume filled engraving. Rising above the bezel is a domed sapphire crystal with internal multiple internal layers of anti-reflective coating. The screw-down caseback has a squid stamped on it finishing off this stunning case on the Nemo Diver.
High polished, applied lume filled indices rest on top of a flat matt black dial. This resides inside the white outer circumference ring with a red half-track minute and seconds indicators that run around the periphery of the dial.
A high polished logo is below 12 o’clock and directly above the 6 o’clock in white is 20 ATM and above that is a NEMO in red. The hands are lume filled with the second’s hand having a rectangle red lume pip. Legibility on the Nemo Diver is fantastic with only the slightest hint of daylight the lume glows on both dial and bezel. In low light conditions, we achieve the same great legibility.
A Miyota 90S5 movement is an unusual choice as it’s often used in open-heart watches. Whatever the reason was for the choice is irrelevant really as it’s a solid 4hz movement that offers a power reserve of 42 hours. Both automatic and hand-winding, the movement in the watch lent to me is operating at a phenomenal +0.98 seconds per day accuracy. That my friends are well within COSC standards and simply amazing at this price point.
More often than not now microbrands tend to use the beads of rice bracelet, especially on diver watches. However, the case design of this watch fit together like a hand and glove. Solid end links integrate perfectly to the watch case to the bezel. The eye is often drawn up and down the 20mm tapered bracelet right to the bezel due to the contrast it gives.
A lot of thought has gone into the bracelet and push-button clasp with folding safety lock. Unlike most brands, they’ve not opted for a cheap divers extension. Instead of choosing to go with six micro-adjustments that would offer better performance for those wanting to use it as a tool watch.
Beads of Rice, Solid End Link, 20mm Tapered to 18mm
WATER RESISTANCE : 20 ATM/ 200M
5 pocket waxed canvas watch roll
Cardboard branded storage tube
Extraordinary is in the title and it’s there for a reason. The Nemo driver is extraordinary in every sense. I love the Nemo Diver case design, retro style, bracelet and the movement. The only thing lacking for me is a date complication which is something that would alter the balance of the dial. And here is the kicker. A true test of a watch is its wear-ability on consecutive days and I’m on day thirteen. I’ll almost certainly be buying this watch as it is by far the best watch in this price range.
Given my admiration, for this watch, I spoke to Derek about a discount for myself and my readers and he has kindly given us 20% off if you use the code Junky20 at checkout. Be quick as the Nemo Diver’s are nearly sold out and will be hard to get hold of after as buyers will be reluctant to sell such a gem.
